A locksmith doesn’t need your old key in hand to cut a new one. What they need instead is a way to identify the correct key code or cylinder configuration for your specific vehicle.
What We Actually Need From You
- Your VIN (vehicle identification number)
- Proof of ownership, registration or title, with ID matching the name on it
This isn’t just paperwork, it’s a legitimate anti-theft safeguard. A responsible locksmith won’t cut a key for a vehicle without confirming ownership.
How the Key Gets Cut
Depending on the vehicle, we either look up the factory key code associated with your VIN, or decode the lock directly (a process called impressioning) using specialized tools. A code-cutting machine then cuts a blank to the exact specification.
How It Gets Programmed
Cutting the blade is only half the job on modern vehicles. The new key’s transponder chip has to be synced to your car’s immobilizer system, usually through the OBD-II port, so the engine will actually recognize and start with it.
What Can Go Wrong
Some manufacturers require an "all keys lost" procedure that erases every previously programmed key and starts fresh, which takes longer and, on certain models, may require dealer-level equipment. We’ll tell you upfront if your vehicle falls into that category.
