Locks wear out quietly. By the time one fails completely, usually locking you out at the worst possible moment, it’s usually been showing signs for months. Here’s what to look (and feel) for.
1. The Key Sticks or Needs Wiggling
A key that used to slide in and turn smoothly but now needs jiggling means the internal pins or springs are wearing down. This gets worse, not better, over time.
2. The Deadbolt Doesn’t Fully Extend
If the bolt doesn’t throw all the way into the strike plate, your door isn’t actually secure, even though it looks locked. This is one of the most common issues we find on service calls across Pasadena and Glendale.
3. Visible Rust or Corrosion
Once you see rust on the cylinder face or bolt, the internal mechanism is usually corroding too, even if you can’t see it. This shows up faster in homes near the marine layer around Toluca Lake and Universal City.
4. The Lock Feels Loose in the Door
Wiggle room in the faceplate or cylinder usually means mounting screws have stripped the wood around them, or the lock body itself has worn loose from thousands of uses. Either way, it’s a weak point.
5. You Can Jiggle the Doorknob Even When Locked
If the knob or lever still rotates slightly when the door is supposedly locked, the latch mechanism is failing internally.
6. The Key Has Been Copied Many Times
Every duplicate made from a duplicate loses a little precision. After 4–5 generations of copies, keys often stop turning smoothly, and you’ve usually lost track of who has one anyway. That’s a good moment to rekey; see our rekey vs. replace guide.
7. It’s a Single-Sided Lock on a Door With Glass Nearby
If someone could break nearby glass and reach in to turn a simple thumbturn, that’s a design flaw worth fixing, often with a different lock configuration rather than a double-cylinder deadbolt, which raises its own fire-egress concerns.
8. It’s Original to an Older Home
We still find original 1940s–60s pin tumbler locks in craftsman-era homes around South Pasadena (91030) and Pasadena (91101). These were well-made for their time, but they predate modern security ratings entirely and are usually worth upgrading.
What Happens if You Ignore These Signs
Worn locks fail in one of two ways: they get harder to open (leading to lockouts) or easier to bypass (a security risk). Neither is one you want to discover under pressure.
