Door Won’t Unlock From Outside?

Key turns fine, but the door itself won't budge. Here's what's actually happening.

This is a different problem than a key that won't turn, here, the key turns just fine, but the door itself won't open. Here's what's usually going on.

Bolt and Strike Plate Misalignment

The most common cause. Doors shift slightly over time from humidity, settling, or heavy use, throwing the deadbolt out of alignment with the strike plate hole, even though the lock mechanism itself works perfectly.

Latch Binding on the Frame

If the door has swollen slightly (common in older wood doors after rain) the latch can bind against the frame even when unlocked.

Weatherstripping Pressure

New or thick weatherstripping can create enough friction that the door feels "locked" even when it isn't.

A Genuinely Failing Lock

If none of the above applies, the internal mechanism itself may be failing. See our common reasons locks fail guide.

Quick Things to Try

  • Lift up slightly on the door handle while turning the key, this can realign a settled door
  • Check for visible gaps or shifting around the frame
